CONCORD, N.H. — Lottery applications are now available for the adventure of a lifetime – hunting moose in New Hampshire. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department’s 2010 moose hunt lottery is open! The nonrefundable application fee is $15 for New Hampshire residents and $25 for nonresidents. New Hampshire’s moose hunt is nine days long, starting the third Saturday in October. This year’s hunt runs from October 16-24, 2010. The overall odds of being selected in last year’s lottery were 1 in 22 for New Hampshire residents and 1 in 63 for nonresidents, some of the best odds in the nation for moose hunting. Read more

The first week of October was finally here. The first three days were spent in my favorite stand watching 3 raccoons in which I had named Larry, Curly, and Moe. The mother raccoon was slightly bigger than the two younger ones, and seemed curious to every movement surrounding them. The days here in eastern Oklahoma in October were still in the 80’s with mosquitoes buzzing everywhere. I was wondering if it were still to hot to hunt and questioned myself again over and over. We heard the bull bugle at first light and snuck into his core area. When I hit a lick on my bugle, the bull simply came unglued and stormed our position like a tank, crashing through brush and small lodgepole pines like they were atchsticks. Before we could react he was in our lap and we were pinned down, myself hiding behind a camera, too afraid to even touch the tripod for fear of my shaking hands would run the footage. All I could see of my partner edged against a stunted pine was the tip of his undrawn arrow shaking uncontrollably on the rest. Before a shot presented itself, the bull smelled a rat and disappeared as quickly as he arrived.
New Hampshire Pre-Files “Firearms Freedom Act” Bill

New Hampshire Representative Dan Itse has filed HB1285, New Hampshire’s version of a “Firearms Freedom Act”.
Gary Marbut, president of Montana Shooting Sports Association and instrumental author of the Montana Firearms Freedom Act, says that Itse’s version, somewhat of a clone of Montana’s, calls for criminal penalties against anyone attempting to enforce federal gun laws against the manufacturers of New Hampshire-made guns, etc.

2009 New Hampshire Deer and Bear Hunting Season Results

CONCORD, N.H. — Based on preliminary deer registration tallies, N.H. hunters harvested 10,390 deer during the 2009 season. This preliminary statewide total kill was down about 5% from the actual 2008 deer kill of 10,916, but is comparable to season results prior to 2006.
Based on these 2009 preliminary registration figures by county (which indicate where deer were registered, not necessarily killed), results were mixed, according to Kent Gustafson, Deer Project Leader for the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. Read more
A Warning To Outdoor Users About Echinococcus, From Worms

This is a warning to outdoor users about a potentially deadly biological event that could result from one’s curiosity to poke at and kick through scat from wolves, coyotes and foxes. Of course not everyone knowingly does this but many hunters, trappers and simply the curious, want to know what these animals have been eating.

Greetings, hunters! Hope you’re having a good season afield. As of mid-week, more than half of moose hunters have been successful. New Hampshire’s deer herd came through last winter in good shape, which bodes well for the upcoming muzzleloader season, which starts October 31 (except in WMU-A where it opens November 2 ); and the firearms deer season, which launches November 11.
YOUTH DEER WEEKEND OCTOBER 24-25 — This year’s Youth Deer Hunting Weekend is upon us (October 24 and 25), providing young hunters 15 years of age or younger the opportunity to take a deer of either sex while accompanied by an adult hunter. The adult must be at least 18 years old, with a valid N.H. hunting license. The youth weekend provides youngsters a chance to learn deer hunting and other outdoor skills that can provide a lifetime of enjoyment. Moose Hunt Update – Half of N.H. Moose Hunters Successful So Far

CONCORD, N.H. — As of Wednesday, October 21, a total of 265 moose had been taken in the 2009 New Hampshire moose hunt (158 bulls and 107 cows). That means that just over half (51%) of hunters holding moose permits had succeeded by the mid-way point in the state’s moose hunt, very similar to the hunter success rate at this point in the moose season last year. The nine-day season runs through Sunday, October 25, 2009.
“Hunters have reported seeing a lot of big bulls this year,” said New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Moose Project Leader Kristine Rines. “People have observed quite a few groups of bachelor bulls together, suggesting that the rut, or breeding season, is pretty much over.” Read more
After a little internet searching, reading, and checking up on this stuff I found its a pretty well established product in Canada and hails from Quebec where they have this funny habit of speaking a lot of French. Thus the name, Jig-A-Loo, and the companys claim it derives from a saying they have up north, Ive got it!
